How Diamonds are Formed

The hardest gemstones known to man, diamonds are surprisingly simple in composition. Each diamond is made of common carbon, with a melting point of 6,900 degrees Fahrenheit. Hundreds of miles below sea level, the elemental forces of heat and pressure within deposits of boiling magma transform carbon into diamond. When the volcanic mass eventually thrusts upwards, diamonds emerge.
